The 2018 Traverse and Escape are both SUVs, but they aren’t quite in the same class of vehicle. Why is there such a difference in price? One is larger than the other. Large Versus Midsize SUV

Despite the fact that both vehicles technically classify as midsize, the Traverse is significantly larger and roomier. The Traverse technically has fewer cubic feet of storage space than the Escape when the third row is up, but that’s hardly a dealbreaker. Once the third and second rows are down the Traverse has a massive amount of cargo space.

The Escape, on the other hand, lacks the third row, but it makes up for it with roomy cargo space. It doesn’t match the Traverse when every row is flattened, but it’s enough to carry most luggage, small furniture, and tools.

Finally, the Traverse may be a great passenger vehicle, but be aware that the third row is slightly cramped for adults. It’s just the right size for little ones, teens, and adults who are naturally on the smaller size.  As an average-sized adult, you’ll still fit—but you may be less comfortable than you would be in the Escape.

Engine and Fuel Economy

The Traverse’s and Escape’s engines are also quite different; each has unique pros and cons. The Traverse has a more powerful engine. Its V6 nets 310 HP and runs on a nine-speed automatic transmission. Compare that to the Escape’s I-4 engine with 168 horsepower and six-speed transmission.

If you need raw power in your SUV, then the Traverse is the way to go. If you need strength, you should also go with the Traverse.  

Now, here’s the catch. All that extra weight cuts down on the Traverse’s fuel economy, giving you a lower mpg rating. It gets 17 city mpg and 25 highway mpg, which isn’t bad for a larger sized SUV, but it’s a noticeable enough difference from its cohort.

As for the Ford Escape? Its lighter frame allows it to achieve 21 city mpg and 29 highway mpg. This is a significant improvement. The Traverse also has a more extended range it can travel before refueling, thanks to the size of its fuel tank.

The 2018 Escape and Traverse are both excellent vehicles in their own right, so it’s no surprise that people often find themselves in a quandary trying to choose.
