Celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Ford F-150 at Ford Dealers in Indianapolis | Community Ford Mooresville Blog

It is hard to believe the Ford F-150 is 40 years old. The F-150 joins the long line of Ford F-Series pickup trucks, which date back to 1948 when the first F-Series trucks rolled off the production line and were delivered to Ford dealers in Indianapolis and elsewhere!

Over the years, the F-Series of trucks has been a leading choice among consumers. So much so, the F-Series pickups became the most sold vehicle in 1977. In addition, for the past 38 years in a row, the F-Series has been the top-selling truck in the country. Furthermore, since 1948, the F-Series line of pickups has achieved the most-sold vehicle 32 times.

1975 – 1979

The first F-150s were produced in 1975, during the F-Series’ sixth generation. Prior to this time, the Ford F-100 has been the leading truck contender. The F-150 served as a heavy-duty option for people looking for larger payload capacities than currently offered in the F-100. At this point, the truck was also only offered as a rear-wheel-drive model.

1980 – 1986

The seventh generation saw changes in designs as fuel efficiencies started to become more important to truck buyers. New models during this period started to incorporate aluminum, plastics, and lighter steel in their design to reduce the overall weight and provide increased mileage per gallon. Ford also rolled out its first diesel pickup in the F-250 line in 1983. In 1984, the F-150 become the base model pickup, as Ford decided it was time to retire the F-100.

1987 – 1991

As technologies improved, headlamps shifted toward halogen bulbs and other new features. Ford was one of the first to offer standard anti-lock rear braking systems with the 1987 model year.

1992 – 1996

The ninth generation saw further aerodynamic improvements, along with more “sporty” designs to attract more potential buyers. The 1994 model was the first to include driver-side airbags and other new safety features. In 1995, the F-Series became the world’s best-selling vehicle when it surpassed the Volkswagen Beetle.

1997 – 2003

Ford continued to develop many “firsts” in the truck vehicle class during this time. They were the first to release a “third-door” option, and the first to offer dual rear doors on its trucks. The tenth generation also included a redesigned F-150 and F-250, as well as the launch of the Super Duty lines.

2004 – 2008

The eleventh generation F-Series features larger vehicle designs, as consumer’s demand for larger trucks and SUVs increased. Ford continued to feature a variety of designs, including its Crew Cab and SuperCab options.

2009 – 2014

For 2009, Ford released redesigned F-Series trucks featuring many improvements and enhancements, many related to technological advances. Ford also boasted engines that could provide higher output, while also releasing one of the first six-speed automatic transmissions.

2015 – Present

The thirteenth generation features lighter weight trucks, with a bold and aggressive design. Smart technologies have become an integral part of the F-150 and F-Series trucks. The F-150 has also been selected as the NFL’s preferred truck!
