Ford Edge Offers a More Carlike Ride Than Chevy Traverse | Community Ford Mooresville Blog

For car buyers seeking a vehicle on the larger end of the mid-size SUV segment, the Ford Edge and Chevy Traverse are solid choices. Both are reliable and safe, but the 2018 Ford Edge has a few extras that just can’t be found on the Traverse, including a smoother driving experience.

Performance

The Ford Edge’s standard engine is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that produces 245 horsepower and 275 ft-lb of torque. On the SEL and Titanium trim levels, buyers can get a V6 that cranks out 280 horsepower and 250 ft-lb of torque. The top-tier Sport trim comes standard with a turbocharged V6 that produces 315 horsepower and 350 ft-lb of torque.

The standard engine for the Traverse is a 3.6-liter V6 that produces 310 horsepower and 266 ft-lb of torque. Top trim levels make a turbo-charged four-cylinder that produces 255 horsepower and 295 ft-lb of torque.

While the standard engine of the Traverse puts out more horsepower than the Edge, the Traverse is larger and bulkier than the Edge, making it more sluggish than the Ford vehicle. On the road, the Traverse is a bit dull, compared to the Edge, which is more responsive and nimble.

Interior

Chevy has made a lot of progress with the Traverse’s once-Spartan interior, but the Edge still provides a much nicer cabin. The Edge’s cabin has a premium look and feel, as Ford incorporated many high-quality materials into the interior design of the edge. Child seat anchor access is easy—a feature parents with young children will appreciate. The Edge’s cabin is well-insulated against noise, whereas the Traverse is somewhat deficient in this regard.

Fuel Economy

The Ford Edge holds a small advantage over the Traverse when it comes to fuel efficiency. The standard engine version of the Traverse gets 18 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. The Edge, when equipped with a standard engine, gets 20 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. That may seem like an insignificant difference, but, over the course of a year, it could save you a tidy amount of money on fuel.

Price

The Ford Edge is a more affordable vehicle than the Chevy Traverse. An entry-level version of the 2018 Ford Edge is available for $29,200. A base 2018 Chevy Traverse costs $29,930.

Price gaps between the Edge and Traverse grow wider as you move up the trim levels for each vehicle. A fully loaded Ford Edge Sport costs $40,675, while a maxed-out Traverse High Country costs $52,050.

When you consider the advantages the Edge has over the Traverse, and the lower price of the Edge, the choice is clear—you have to go with the Edge.
