Ford Mooresville Car Dealerships to Offer Retrofitted Wi-Fi on Older Ford Models | Community Ford Mooresville Blog

While Ford continues to roll out updates to its wireless connectivity in newer models as technology continues to advance, it has discovered many owners of 2010 to 2016 Ford vehicles are not always ready to trade in their vehicles for a newer model.

Information obtained through customer surveys and feedback from both consumers and Ford car dealerships in Mooresville and throughout the country revealed interest in Ford’s SYNC system and its features, but, at the same time, uncovered a large market segment that like their current vehicles and want access to some of the latest technologies without having to purchase a new Ford.

After learning this information, Ford developed its SmartLink device for owners of a wide range of 2010 to 2016 Ford and Lincoln models. Now, owners of older vehicles can have access to unique features they may not currently have, including:

  • Remote Locking and Unlocking
  • Remote Engine Start
  • Vehicle Location
  • Service Reminders
  • Vehicle Health
  • Tracking of Driving Habits
  • Suggestions for Better Driving
  • Security Alerts
  • Wireless Hotspot with Support for 8 Simultaneously Connected Devices

Teen driving safety is another feature that will be offered with SmartLink. Parents will have the ability to set speed limits and be alerted when teen drivers exceed the preset limits. In addition, parents can create “geofences,” which are boundaries where the teen is allowed to drive. If they go outside of the preset boundaries, SmartLink will notify them immediately.

It is important to remember this retrofitted Wi-Fi option is not the same as Ford’s SYNC system, and it will require using a separate mobile app to take advantage of the wide array of features. Furthermore, there are a few models the device will not work with, but, for the vast majority of owners, the option to upgrade to newer technology features is exciting news. The vehicle exceptions are those models which already have an onboard modem, including:

  • Certain 2015 and 2016 Lincoln models with the Reserve or Black Label package.
  • Most 2012 to 2016 Ford Focus Energi and Electric models.
  • 2013 to 2016 Ford C-Max Energi models.

Ford advises current 2010 to 2016 model owners to check with their local new and used Ford dealerships in their area to confirm compatibility once the device is made available for sale later this spring or summer. The device is currently undergoing testing through select Ford dealers.

Consumers can also check if their local Ford dealer is one of the ones that was selected to test the SmartLink device to see if they need more people to help with testing and might be able to obtain the device prior to its actual release.

The SmartLink device will plug into the OBD-II port on the vehicle, and it offers 4G LTE wireless connectivity through Verizon.
