IIHS Names Lincoln, Kia, Hyundai Vehicles Among Safest Picks | CommunityCars.com Blog

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recently named its list of safest vehicles, with cars and SUVs from Lincoln, Kia, and Hyundai earning the organization’s Top Safety Pick+ designation. The designation is a big achievement for automakers, as the IIHS tightened its Top Safety Pick+ designation for 2018.

For Indiana car buyers interested in some of the safest vehicles on the road, the Lincoln, Kia, and Hyundai models that won the award include:

  • 2017 Lincoln Continental – The revived Continental model won an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award in the large luxury car segment. Lincoln added the Continental back to its lineup in 2017, and the new vehicle lives up to its predecessors’ reputation for top quality. The vehicle has powerful engines and a very comfortable interior. It’s also equipped with the latest active safety features and has a well-constructed large body.

  • 2018 Kia Forte – The Forte was one of the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ winners in the small cars segment. The new Forte offers a lot in a small package, including a surprisingly nice interior, comfy seats, good cargo capacity, and an easy-to-use infotainment system.

The Forte is a well-built small automobile that commuters can feel safe driving. Optional active safety features include a rearview camera, automatic emergency braking, rear cross traffic alert, blind spot detection, lane departure warning, lane keeping assistance, lane change assistance, and forward collision warning.

  • 2018 Kia Soul – The Kia Soul is a critical favorite, as automotive reviewers love the eccentric design and wide range of options available on the Soul. The Soul is also a solid safety choice, winning the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award in the small cars segment, along with its sibling the Forte.

There’s a lot to love about the Soul, including outstanding reliability ratings, a great warranty, a spacious cabin, plenty of cargo room, and a turbocharged engine option. The great safety rating from IIHS is just a cherry on the top of an already delightful vehicle.

  • 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport – The sexed-up version of the Santa Fe is no slouch when it comes to safety, earning the prestigious IIHS Top Safety Pick+ designation in the midsize SUV segment.

The Santa Fe Sport incorporated some new safety features into its design for 2017, including adaptive headlights with auto high beams, a 360-degree parking camera, lane departure alert, adaptive cruise control, and automatic emergency braking. The vehicle has a pretty generous assortment of standard safety features, including a rearview camera, remote access, geo-fencing, and more.

Earning an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ designation is a big achievement, as the organization has a rigorous list of requirements automobiles must meet to win the award. To qualify for the designation, a vehicle must earn “Good” ratings in driver-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraint tests, along with a “Good” or “Acceptable” rating in passenger-side small overlap front tests.

The vehicle must also earn an “Advanced” or “Superior” rating for front crash prevention and a “Good” rating for its headlights. The small overlap front test and headlight test are new requirements.
