Nissan Altima and Maxima Wins Top Rated IIHS Pedestrian Prash Prevention | CommunityCars.com Blog

Nissan Altima and Maxima Wins Top Rated IIHS Pedestrian Crash Prevention Accolades

The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) has issued its latest findings for front crash prevention systems and it’s good news for owners of a Nissan Altima or a Nissan Maxima. The 2019 and 2020 models of the Nissan Maxima have been deemed ‘superior’ by the IIHS, while the same year models for the Nissan Altima has been declared ‘advanced’.

This has been seen as industry approval for Nissan’s policy of adopting the best safety technologies for all their models, and not just their luxury automobiles. Advanced features such as Pedestrian Detection and AEB (Automatic Emergency Braking) are available across the board with all contemporary Nissan Maxima models.

It Is Nissan’s Policy to Make All Their Vehicles as Safety Conscious as Possible

"The well-being of those inside our cars is just as important as the well-being of those outside our vehicles," said Rob Warren, a director at Nissan NA. "AEB with Pedestrian Detection is announced as standard or available on ten Nissan vehicles for the 2020 model year, and we're working on expanding the technology further as quickly as possible."

The 2020 version of the Nissan Maxima now has Pedestrian Detection and AEB as standard. It is one of only two non-luxury automobiles to earn a superior rating following the release of the latest IIHS ratings.

Both the 2019 and 2020 versions of the Nissan Altima was one of the few models to earn an ‘advanced’ rating in its midsize automobile class.

Both the AEB and Pedestrian Detection systems perfected by Nissan utilize a combination of camera-based technology and radar to identify nearby vehicles and pedestrians. If the system feels that there is danger of a collision with either a pedestrian or another vehicle, it transmits both audible and visual signals to the driver and then slows and stops the vehicle automatically, reducing the chances of an impact or the impact’s severity.

Very Few Vehicles Pass All IIHS Evaluations With a Completely Unblemished Record

During IIHS evaluations each vehicle is put through a total of six different tests – three separate evaluations at two different speeds. During the latest batch of tests that were conducted, the Nissan Maxima was the only vehicle that passed all six tests without a collision.

"Carmakers often roll out these kinds of advanced systems in more expensive luxury lines or as expensive options, so the superior performance of the standard systems on the more mainstream Maxima is noteworthy," said David Harkey, the president of the IIHS.

In the first series of tests of both luxury and non-luxury small SUVs undertaken by the IIHS this year, the 2019 Nissan Rogue also secured an ‘advanced’ rating. Nissan’s ‘Safety Shield 360’ now comes as standard on all 2020 model Nissan Rogue SV and SL trims.

All 2020 models of the Nissan Maxima also come with Safety Shield 360 as standard. Other safety features include rear automatic braking, rear cross traffic alerts, blind spot warning, lane departure warnings and high beam assists. There are seven versions of the 2020 Maxima available, with MSRPs between $34,250 (S model) and $42,780 (Platinum Reserve model).

The 2020 version of the Nissan Altima comes in seven different versions with MSRPs between $24,100 (S model) and $35,180 (Platinum VC-Turbo model).
