Fifty years ago, Carroll Shelby was tasked with designing a high-performance test vehicle for Goodyear so the tire manufacturer could experiment with various types of tire designs for the popular muscle cars of the late 1960s and early 1970s. The result of this task was the first-ever Ford Mustang Shelby Super Snake.

The initial concept vehicle was extremely costly, so Carroll Shelby only built the single test vehicle. Shelby combined a Mustang GT500 body along with the V-8 engine out of the Mustang-styled race car, the GT40. However, the test vehicle drew the attention of muscle car enthusiasts everywhere.  

Since that time, the Shelby Super Snake design has been released on numerous occasions as a limited release Ford Mustang model available at Ford dealerships. What sets this particular vehicle design apart from other Mustangs is the limited production, along with the variety of customized modifications and other “bells and whistles” that would satisfy any avid muscle car enthusiast.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Shelby Super Snake, Ford and Shelby will produce a total of 500 limited edition models. The anniversary model uses the current Mustang GT for the body and tosses in a variety of upgrades and modifications. The total price tag to get one of these highly sought-after limited edition vehicles is around $70,000.

It is worth noting, Shelby will also offer an upgrade option for current owners of the 2017 Mustang GT model. The cost for upgrading to a Shelby Super Snake design is approximately $37,000. However, Ford and Shelby will adhere to the 500 model cap, which will include both upgraded GTs and custom designed GTs.

Ford and Shelby will build a Super Snake in any color currently offered in the Mustang GT line. Furthermore, the 50th Anniversary model can be customized using either a manual or automatic transmission.
