Ford Teams with Supermodel Karlie Kloss to Sponsor Coding Camp for Girls | Community Ford Mooresville Blog

Ford Motor Company is all about innovation and public service. A new initiative with supermodel Karlie Kloss lets Ford put these two values to work promoting women in science careers.

Ford will support Kloss’ camp for coding, Kode with Klossy, a summer program intended to inspire more young women to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers.

Kloss, who, in addition to being a supermodel, is also an avid coder, founded Kode with Klossy in 2014. The partnership with Kloss will allow her program to expand and offer 300 scholarships for 15 summer camps in 10 cities.

STEM careers have historically been dominated by men, and many educational institutions and industries are working to change this tradition, opening up opportunities for talented female professionals. According to AdWeek, around 74 percent of girls express interest in STEM courses in school, but very small numbers of them go on to pursue college degrees and careers in STEM fields. Just one percent of computer science majors are women.

Kode with Klossy is far from the only program Ford has sponsored to promote women in STEM careers. Ford launched its Ford STEAM Experience in 2016 (STEM with the addition of Architecture) to inspire a new generation of female engineers and inventors. Ford has, thus far, budgeted $63 million to science and related education programs, including scholarships and mentorship programs.

Ford also has initiated the Ford Prize for Women in STEM Study, which recognizes the achievements of women in STEM fields. The prize is awarded to female students who are set to complete a STEM degree and who can demonstrate how they’ve inspired other women to pursue science and technology. Ford also sponsors a Professional Women’s Network within the company.

Ford has a wide range of philanthropic activities. The Ford Foundation, established in 1949, has invested nearly $1.5 billion in civic organizations around the world to promote better community life, education, and driving safety. In 2016, alone, the company contributed more than $58 million to charitable efforts.
