Compared Used Ford Expedition Vs. Dodge Durango

Comparing the Used Dodge Durango and the Used Ford Expedition isn’t an apples-to-apples proposition, as the Expedition is in the large SUV class and the Durango is classified as a mid-size SUV, although it’s in the upper range of that category. However, the Durango can do many of the things the Expedition does, and do them at a lower price, making the Durango the smart pick for Indiana auto consumers.

Performance

The Ford Expedition offers more powerful engines than the Durango, but the Durango has a smaller, lighter body to move, making this difference in horsepower negligible. The Expedition has more towing power than the Durango, but it may be overkill for many auto consumers. The Durango’s maximum towing capacity of 8,700 lbs. is more than enough for most consumers. When you consider the price difference between the Durango and the Expedition, paying thousands extra for towing capacity you don’t need doesn’t make a lot of sense.

Interior

The entry-level Durango has lots of great standard features, including automatic climate control, a USB port, a rearview camera, and the Uconnect infotainment system, along with a 7-inch touchscreen. The vehicle also offers Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as standard equipment. You can also pop in a third row of seats to provide the Durango with the same people-hauling capacity as the Expedition for just $995 more.

On the standard Expedition, you get a few more USB ports, but you don’t get auto climate control or Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. Considering that the base Expedition costs around $30,000 more than the Durango, and that you can still get an even swankier Durango GT or Durango Citadel with lots of creature comforts for less than the entry price for an Expedition, the value buy is obviously the Durango.

Price

Have we talked about price? The Used Durango is significantly cheaper than the Ford Expedition. The Durango starts at $29,995 for a base model and a fully loaded Used Dodge Durango costs around $62,995. By comparison, the Ford Expedition starts at around $51,695. A fully loaded version of the Expedition costs around $72,710.

Bottom line: For most auto buyers, the Expedition is going to be expensive overkill. You can easily get the performance and comfort you need at a reduced price by opting for a Used Dodge Durango instead.
