When Do I Need Transmission Services for My Vehicle? | CommunityCars.com Blog,

The transmission in your Jeep Compass is a complex system that does require occasional services to ensure it functions correctly. The frequency of service depends on whether you have an automatic or manual transmission and your driving habits.

The transmission fluid used inside the transmission system helps to keep the gears and moving parts lubricated. Over time, the fluid can degrade and become contaminated, so it will not lubricate as well. This is why it is important to have the fluid changed and the transmission serviced at our authorized jeep dealership in Indianapolis.

The transmission system is considered a “sealed system,” where the fluid level should not change unless there is a problem. For instance, if you check the transmission fluid and see it needs fluid, this often indicates a leak.

Automatic Transmissions

In Compass crossover SUVs with automatic transmissions, there are several gears all lined up on the drive shaft. The transmission “shifts” gears based on the amount of pressure placed on the gas pedal and the speed of the vehicle. As you speed up, the transmission shifts from lower gears to higher gears, and vice versa when you slow down.

Manual Transmissions

With a manual transmission, things work a little differently. The gears are lined up on the drive shaft, just like in an automatic. However, to change gears, you depress and release the clutch to shift up or down.

How Often Does the Transmission Need to Be Serviced?

It really depends on your driving habits, driving conditions, and other such factors. It is beneficial to review the recommendations in your Compass owner’s manual to get a general idea of when this service needs to be performed. Keep in mind, this is just a guideline, and your transmission may need to be serviced more often.

For this reason, you will want to get recommendations from your authorized Jeep service technician. They better understand your driving habits, driving conditions, and other factors that affect the quality of the transmission fluid to help you determine a good service interval.

Keeping the above in mind, the following are Jeep’s recommendations for transmission service:

  • Manual transmissions should have the fluid changed every 50,000 miles or five years, whichever occurs first. More frequent fluid changes may be necessary if you do a lot of stop-and-go or in-city driving, off-road driving, and driving in sandy/dry areas, or if you use the Compass for commercial purposes.
  • The fluid in automatic transmissions should be changed every 60,000 miles or six years for frequent in-city driving, off-road driving, or commercial purposes. Otherwise, under normal operations, the fluid should be changed every 120,000 miles or twelve years.

The transmission filter, if equipped, should also be replaced anytime you have the fluid changed. In addition, if you notice leaks or a reduction in fluid, you will want to have the transmission inspected and serviced right away.
